Cave Dreamer, oil on canvas. The inspiration behind this piece is an area of the Gower Coast, Paviland Cave, where bones known as the 'Red Lady' were discovered in a cave. Stained by ochre, and accompanied by jewellery made from seashells and fragments of reindeer antler, these are the remains of a young man, dating from the last Ice Age, when the local landscape was very different, the land mass joined then to what we now know as France, and Tundra, home to sabre tooth tiger, mammoth, wolf. I believe that they are the oldest human remains found in Europe. I was brought up on the Gower Coast and always found the area romantic and inspirational. The changing edges of landscape is a recurrent theme in some of my paintings. This painting, for me, is about a sense of place, the continuum of life and energy in a changing landscape.
